Of all the breaks that children get off from school, the mid-winter one can be the toughest to plan for. Without any family vacations booked, finding fun activities to keep your kids busy and entertained throughout the week can be a challenge. But never fear, parents. There are plenty of programs, events and destinations to pick from if you'll be staying local this coming week. Stella Ohana, a mother of four from Montebello, has a few day trips planned with her kids, who are 6, 8, 10 and 12 years old. Their week will include a visit up to Cornwall to check out the outdoor discovery center at Hudson Highlands Museum and hitting New York City to see Disney's "Newsies" and exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art. Also, thanks to some discounted tickets Ohana snagged at Costco, the family will spend a day skiing and snowboarding at Hunter Mountain. "I always look for good local things to do with them, but now that they're a little older, the usual kids museum doesn't always do it," said Ohana. Jenny Mirmelstein's three boys, aged 6, 11 and 13, are also bound for Manhattan next week with their mom. The itinerary includes the Museum of Natural History, checking out some new food spots - Cookie Dough Confections, an edible cookie dough shop and Black Tap, known for its over-the-top burgers and shakes - and a walk through Central Park.
